Intramural Submission of NIH Grant Applications

This SOP has internal roles only.

Purpose

To enable intramural investigators to apply for some NIH grants, e.g., K22, K99/R00, Roadmap (X01), or other awards.

Procedure

To submit an electronic application through Grants.gov, investigators must work with an authorized organizational representative (AOR). For more information, see the Grant Application, Electronic SOP.

Before submitting a grant application, investigators must register as PIs in the eRA Commons.

Once investigators have a Commons account, they can monitor the progress and status of their application, see their summary statement, and submit just-in-time information.

Intramural Investigators

Find Funding Opportunities

• To find Roadmap opportunities, go to NIH Roadmap Funding Opportunities.
• For NIAID, go to the NIH Funding Opportunities Relevant to NIAID.

Register With the Commons

• To register with the Commons, email NIAIDGETGRANT@niaid.nih.gov in the Office of the Director, Division of Extramural Activities, at least six weeks in advance of your application's due date.
• When staff from NIAID Get Grant contacts you, provide your Social Security number, birth date, and a proposed unique user name. Also include information on any previous support you've received from NIH.
• You will receive an "account created" notification email from the Commons.

Submit Your Application Through Grants.gov

• Contact your AOR at NIAIDGETGRANT@niaid.nih.gov to discuss your plans to submit an application. Do this at least six weeks before you want to submit.
• No later than one week before the Grants.gov submission deadline, send the completed application package to email NIAIDGETGRANT@niaid.nih.gov.
• The AOR will notify you when Grants.gov has received your application. Grants.gov performs a basic form validation and virus check.
• After passing Grants.gov validation, you will receive an email from the Commons that it has received your application.
  • Address any errors or warnings. To see what these are, follow the instructions in the email from the Commons.

  • To correct anything in your application, work with your AOR and follow procedures at NIH's Submitting Changed/Corrected Applications. Your AOR must submit your changed/corrected application.
  • If your application has no errors, the Commons generates an image of the forms and PDF attachments. You and your AOR have two business days to review the image before the Commons sends it forward for NIH's administrative review. • Track your application's progress through the Grant Folder in your Commons account.
